One of the employees at the quilt store told a customer she needed to try more complex projects because she was frequently commenting that she completed everything and had nothing to do. She suggest to do projects, for instance with smaller pieces. I couldn't help but ask myself the same question. Do I need more complex projects? I usually design all projects myself whether sewing or painting. No copying, except for what I use as a baseline outline form photocopies, especially if what I am looking at is intricate. The images are reduced to line and a far cry from its voluminous and decorated origin. And to defend myself, I can draw. Its when I reduce photographs to line in Adobe and play with tile-ing, that is a different story.
Anyway, I got a little more confidence in layering and have decided to change the intended direction of a series into something else. Something with more punch, weight and finish. Granted they are all 12" by 18" on Luann plywood, but I'll get resistance to brush work unlike canvas. I can work larger, but storage is at issue. Right now I have two 4' by 8' paintings stored outside in the Texas heat for lack of room in storage spaces.
I also started on another painting. Same method as the last two I showed you. I laid out the paperwork and the gesso is drying now. Tomorrow may be the day, Sabbath respecting. No photos of that one posted. I want the pics to be a surprise. I used several enlargements from my sketchbooks, photos and paper pieces from other important memories to build this one.
