Hubris
Media/Method: Gouache over paper collage
Dimensions: Varied
Price: Price on Request
Statement: Hubris is born from the eventuality of my grandmother's death. She died June 1st this year. I promised myself I would not shut down to observe grief, but to continue working through the emotional process that was triggered by the occasion. Hubris is an attempt to tame my pride for living independently. I seek a deeper humility towards my elders and the dead as a part of my healing process. Nature has always been key to healing for me, so with Hubris I have retreated into the undulating lines of the garden and its creatures to begin a renewed understanding of the seasons and cycles of human life.

Incomplete Series 2009-2013
I've been holding back on some of these untitled pieces because they belong to an incomplete series. Mind you, not abandoned, just set aside. Other reasons pertain to my studio having poor air circulation all the while I was oil painting. I learned my lesson early on in 2013 only after several years of fumes and denial. With the current improvement, namely an air conditioner and a box fan, I may venture back out in this layered direction. When the vision and returns I'll be back at this to make it a permanent approach in my ouevre.

Insectes
I was challenged by a gallery owner to create pieces on a larger scale. The American market requires it, he intimated. I was daunted by space concerns and supplies. Confusion was not an option and I took myself on that ride for two years and painting large scale canvases running 48" by 96". With that push I finally melded my reticence for oils and coupled them with collage. I also discovered I did not have to abandon my ethic and become a realist. On the other hand, I discovered manifold more the joys of mixed media and mixed techniques. These pieces are not for sale.

M.F.A. Exhibition: Onion Roots
Gallery shots of my M.F.A. Exhibition: Onion Roots.
Work is not available for exhibition or sale. The title of the show, Onion Roots, had to do with multiple processes of layering. Also that of a personality; most people are like onions. We appear to be whole, but are really a mass of layers of appearances, defenses, and marks all the way down to the root. As a result of working in this vein, I found a groove to establish a style. |
Nebulae y Estrella
Media/Method: Gouache and pencil over paper collage.
Dimensions: The image is sized at 8" x 14" on an 12" x 18" paper Price: $500 a piece; $12,000 for the series What saved my interest in art over seven years ago was a renewed fascination with astronomy. I began rendering starscapes and constellations in blue watercolor and pencil. Soon after I began seeing more abstractions and motion in the stars than I had observed before. Taking up gouache and Greek mythology led me into edification in the method. Nebulae y Estrella takes on passages of dark in the universe and turn them to color and notation. It is a matter of finding dance and sound emanating from stars that crowd the sky on a clear autumn evening . |
Seeds of a Firethorn Oak
Images are composed of oil paint over collage or assemblage.
Sizes are all fixed at an image measurement of 6" by 14" centered on 12" by 18" paper. Images are priced at $325 a piece. Momentum for the series comes from integrating the ephemera I have around the studio. The focal point of which are eight to ten woodblocks used for water-based media printing. I carved the images based on a cross section of a garlic bulb. Once finished the design lent itself to mimic the shapes of leaves and seeds. Finishing off the series meant building surfaces and lending abstract design to support the woodblock print. |
Tin, Cotton, Steel, and Spice
This mixed media series is a comprised of paper collage foundations anchored with acrylic paint and thread painting done in white.
The substrate measures 12"W x 18" H. The image size is 8"W x 14"H.
The series, unframed can be purchased for $18,000 or $800 per piece.
After the initial explorations into thread painting as seen in Untitled Working Series, I decided to pursue more substantial works using the sewing method. This series is a unified outgrowth of both sewing and artistic pursuits I've been making for the past year or more. The papers that provide the structure for the painting come from a range of sources, namely the vegetable garden here at the residence and at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Others I have found at local second hand stores and a regular dumpster diving approach before taking out the household garbage. Lastly, prepared papers are made in the studio.
