Butterflies 2010-2013
All the butterflies in this folio are created from mixed fibers. The body is often simply pieced while the butterfly motif is created by reverse machine applique. All designs are created from a photograph. Creative liberties are taken to abstract the initial drawing. After which fabrics are chosen for the body and wings of the butterfly. Color choices for the remainder of the quilt follow next. As an accent, the compliments in color to the body of the piece frequently take on decorative forms of Native American inspired designs from painting and weaving. My next endeavor is to become well versed in Seminole patchwork. This will give more breadth to the work.

Dolls 2014
Everybody needs a doll from what I have been learning. Not just children or the avid collector. One good, hug worthy doll that is attentive during the wee hours of the night. Not to mention one that is long still snuggling after the lightning and wind has left the neighborhood. I had dabbled in 2009 with making dolls for my niece and nephew. My prototypes and test did not meet with excellent success or encouragement, but I was pleased. I knew nothing about the magnitude of the doll industry and I look beyond HooDoo and Voodoo esoteric meanings. The dolls you will find here were for fun and engendering a smile in the sales booth. Designing the patterns were in the least one of the best exercises I have ever had. Playing origami with fabric goes beyond my analogies of tangrams and piecing.

Ornaments
I've been on a streak designing Christmas ornaments this year. The sketches started early 2014 and took on separate lives scattered in sketch books. What erupted the dam was hitting a wall on the series Tin, Cotton, Steel and Spice. I did not want to let my hands go idle while I looked for ways to come out of the temporary depression. I hit the wall hard and seemed not able to bounce back. So, from a friends encouragement, new drawings and fabric combinations arose inspired by a old sketch. I went into it head first and came out with new eyes. There are six so far complete and I plan six more to join them. Variation on a theme are beginning to stem as well, so there will be more to compliment the form, shape and eclectic nature of the final pieces.
The pieces are roughly 4"W x20"H. Prices range between $30 and $50. If interested check the caption at the bottom of each slide. |

Quilting Arts 2010-2013
Fiber Arts contains two directions. The first is the Lepidoptera series. The second is currently untitled and contains tribal art inspired pieces. Both series, like the two dimensional work, are made from recycled, discarded and second hand items. Sizes and prices are available on request.
Lepidoptera arose out of a visit to the University of New Mexico. While touring, I met a student whose paintings centered on butterflies. As the years went by, I found many artists turning to the insect world for inspiration. Looking for my own genesis, I followed my instincts and paired the studies with mola, or reverse applique. |
Quilting Arts 2014-2018
Quilts for this year seemed to have a productivity and drive like falling water. I am not referring to a gentle rain in the warm summer, but the deluge that comes with the first sights of late Fall moisture after a the dried twig beds of August accumulate in number. Each quilt has its own story from St. Patrick's Honor to The Postman. I even found time to work on the Medicine Quilt Series that has been propelling my right hand draw and pull with pencil and needle since 2007. Each is a mixed fiber work and in most cases are hand quilted. Methods range from machine applique, reverse applique and hand embroidery.
