I have not figured out positioning except maybe head to head. If you have not figure it out yet, it is a moth. A two-barred flasher as in the drawing posted yesterday. I have other piece to use in pattern fill between moths. They are from piecing work studies based on designs in Native American trade quilts. The only problem is do I make a quilt or do I make two tapestries. Maybe the larger work area will push my design and piecing abilities towards a strength instead of a complaint. I'll post again when the embroidery is done. If you like I'll post the other as well as they get done. Enjoy.
Ever vigilant and chipping away at the foundation to carve a niche for myself. I was working today and finally hit a stopping point before I start the embroidery. I got no concrete reaction from mom, but I'll keep going anyway. If you haven't guessed yet, she's a realist. I have three more cut out and the same design will follow except for a change in color.

My next door neighbor (I think) asked to see some of my sketchbook. A few pages was all he wanted, so I am supplying. I go to the park at least once a week to draw the wildlife. I've started to draw the trees and bushes finally. I try to finure it in the larger works, sometimes it comes out, frequently not. The first and last time it did, I used doctored copies of photographs I took for the images. I was scared of my own hand and falling short of reality. Go figure and I am an abstractionist. Getting courage and encouragement to re-explore my days in undergraduate school when my mantra was Leon Golub. Seeing Gigantomachy is a must and the inspiration behind it was Greek mythology. I wonder where the meaning in my collages are besides fondling and cutting paper. The galleries want a track record and I've got years to go before discovering that and I tried and true method. I want to shape on paper. Not 3-D Painting. Thick impasto as I can afford it but making the shapes appear and disappear again. I'll get the supplies and get back to it. though I have ash and linseed oil. And a touch of wax may do it all. Enough about me, time for your to look. I've been away from blogging for a while but still working. I've started the oil paintings as inspired by the collages of Striations I. Slowly I'm working away at it. I'll post as I make more head way. Translating the contrast and edge conflict from paper to oil is challenging, but working the way through is a great experience. Below is some of the other things I've been working on. With the Texas spring weather I've started to get out on location to draw. Mostly pastures and roadsides, not to mention the occasional restaurant view. Needless to say I am happy about it. What follows is the next series which uses woodblock prints. I've shot a few of the images before I incorporate them into collage. Then three collages that have been printed with a block or two. The next step is to use paint to pull colors out and build weight. I've always wanted a job that was really like play. I've finally hit it. I can't seem to stop discovering and working through. Art is it. Also finished two tapestries, I will photograph as soon as I find a good piece of wall space. Four more images posted. Two images posted in Fiber Arts. More to follow as I finish tapestries, etcetera.
Enjoy! ~N. I just posted nine images from the second series. They are to be found at the Current Work page following Striations I.. I'll hold back the images that have glare problems. Matte medium only for me from now on. There are a few more images to crop and prepare. They will come later with the Fiber work.
Enjoy! ~N. I put the finishing touches on the second series this year. For lack of a better nomer I call it Striations II. There are twenty pieces in this run. This time I've incorporated letters( successfully so, I was having a hard time integrating and leveling the surfaces), fabric, gouache and tempera. Some pieces in the run are more effective than others, I may go back and bring all up to a level of finish that is catching.
Photographing was quick and dirty, but I may not be able to use all of the shots because of the glare when shooting. Some had major reflectivity, so I shot at a 45 degree angle, but that turns everything into a parallelogram and catywompus is not what I'm after to correct. I cuts out much during the cropping. Those I'll have to save for actual showing, but they are had in the least. I still have to run the images through Adobe photoshop for presentation, I try to post some today and the rest in the week or so. No titles yet, just bear with please. I've been writing again and the pencil is flowing well on paper. I may leave excerpts here for you to peruse. Speaking of which, I am watching a Mark Twain biography on public television, Part II. I missed some of the first part because of photographing. either way it is still good. Mike Wallace died today. I did like 60 minutes in the day. It was a couple of nights ago, I wondered into my bedroom thinking to lay down for a minute or so. My neighbor outside suggested I draw. I could not resist as I had been planning and planning but never executing the right of preparation to canvas and larger pieces. I started about 7pm and did not lift a finger for mundane things (including the toilet) till 8:30/9pm. I was hooked. Especially after I got back into the swing of ink and brush work, thanks to my other neighbor.
I've been drawing almost every night this week, if not prepping during the day and getting an early start. I have a small stack of brushwork then it builds into mixed media work with colored inks and tempera paint. The source of joy is all the life drawing I did at one of the lakes. The yield has been ducks, geese and song birds. I can't help but remember a story one of my art professors told us early in the semester. There was an artist who could think of nothing to paint and left his canvases bare for months. A massive creative block if you will. He finally gathered up and checked into a hotel room in the city. Finally getting inspiration from his meals, he sketched hundreds of illustrations in pen and ink. I'm also midstream and glum about the last series I collaged. I have not photographed it yet, but will. I think they need more work. The encaustic on fabric did not take as well because it soaked up much of the wax. They were fun, but I need to take a new tact to rescue what I saw in them. Tempera is the thought instead of oil. I have enough and it should layer well. A little scraping and sanding the surface will give better adhesion. Thinking positive. BTW: Happy Easter! |
