Fences, railing, walls, and lines, according to poet Robert Frost, are all constructed to the mindfulness of not only what you are walling out, but also what you are walling in. Self-imposed boundaries are most powerful in that they help us retain personal integrity and wholeness of character. However, we must not forget that the hoard kept out constructs of the shadow side of personal artistic ethic and practical method. As reflected in paper, thread, and fabric, I create lyricism of line. Through subtle changes of tension, flow, and transition, phrasing in color, mark, and gesture construct the page. This method is not only a reflection of a rejected mind, but also the remnants of selection done to investigate the character of an aging emotion and intellect.
My current work is created on several fronts: complex drawings, composite collages, and art quilts. The source of these works is grounded in using recycled elements and found objects to build foundations for detailed surface work. Natural elements are used to add organic design, while the discarded bolsters contrast in yielding hard-edged boundaries. Works are built in stages: layer upon layer of confrontation, balancing, intuition, and immediacy. This psychological method of working approaches the substrate to evidence shadow, translucence, and suggested form.
Works are created by first establishing a rough ground to create a multifaceted construction. Afterwards, tearing down and rebuilding, excavating and covering, as well as polishing or leaving a surface untouched are acts that can been seen even after the artists walks away. The result is a deep exploration into mixed media solutions within the limits of practical conservation. Know that there is dominant and hidden tension in these works. They both yield personal issues to be framed in the abstract. Now knowing “the personal as the political,” I am confidant that the visual language I have evolved into has become my political voice for mapping the depths of the feminine condition.
